We are pleased to announce that, similarly to last year, Cyber-Human Lab (CHL) will offer a summer research internship under the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP). The project will be carried out under the supervision of CHL’s Dr Sławomir Tadeja and Dr Thomas Bohné, as well as Prof. Fulvio Forni from the Control Group. The UROP opportunity will also be supported by Adam Peryt, MD, from Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Dr Emilia Świetlik, MD, Cambridge BHF CRE Career Development Fellow and Senior Clinical Fellow at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
This opportunity is supported by the award from Engineering for Clinical Practice Grants (EPC Grants). We are thankful to the ECP Grant Committee for bestowing us this grant.
In recent years, robot-assisted surgery (RAS) has emerged as a potential solution addressing many of the physical limitations of manual laparoscopic equipment and paving the way for broader access to the benefits of minimal-access surgery for patients. Nonetheless, mastering robotic surgery techniques involves a steep learning curve, as surgeons need time and practice to use robotic systems effectively. Here, we can use augmented reality (AR) to enable low-cost, effective medical training by blending virtual artefacts in the trainee’s field of view. Furthermore, introducing an AR surgical robot training system can provide a safe training opportunity for experienced surgeons and trainees at earlier stages of their careers. The proposed project will investigate how to design an AR-based system coupled with a collaborative robot (cobot) for surgeons’ training.
The UROP opportunity is restricted to Cambridge/CUED undergraduates only. If interested, please send your CV and application to Dr Sławomir Tadeja (skt40@eng.cam.ac.uk).
