Emma Kallina

Doctoral Researcher

Emma is driven by a desire to design technology that enhances human well-being – beyond human performance.

She started her PhD at the Institute for Manufacturing (Centre for Technology Management) in October 2021. Under the supervision of Thomas Bohné (advisor: Stephen Cave) she is researching factors that contribute to a beneficial human-AI collaboration at the workplace.
Emma’s academic background lies in Psychology (BSc at the Eberhard-Karls Universität Tübingen, Germany). During her MSc in Human-Computer Interaction (University College London), she researched the influence of personality traits and the application context on the user’s trust towards an AI system. She was awarded the scholarship from ‘The Foundation of German Business’ (SDW) in 2015, which continues to support her academic career by covering tuition fees and living costs. She is the student representative of the scholarship’s UK group; coordinating the organisation of seminars, social events, and the alumni network.
Prior to her PhD, Emma has worked as the main UX Researcher in the development of the first NHS-approved application for COVID-19 vaccination sites across England. During her BSc, she was tutoring software-based statistics and volunteered as student representative in various committees. Recently, she joined an incubator programme for early-stage startup ideas. In her spare time, Emma loves to rock climb and be outdoors with friends.
